What is a compote?

The easiest way to describe a compote is a dish, bowl or vessel that is on a pedestal or some kind of footed stand. They can be used for a candy dish, a centerpiece, to hold a collection. Simply put, they can be used in lieu of a standard bowl where you want to add visual interest and height!

Compotes can be made of porcelain, glass, crystal, brass, silver and many other materials.

Where to use compotes?

They can be used everywhere! I especially love when they are used next to a kitchen sink to hold a sponge or a scrub brush and in the bathroom to hold lotions. For me, it is all about that height. It adds so much dimension and character to an otherwise flat and boring surface.

Compotes are especially popular to use as a vase for a floral centerpiece for tables. Just think of some of the wedding tablescapes you see in magazines…the beautiful height they add and the lush greenery woven between them down the center of a long table. I love the compotes Angela Marie Events uses in her wedding table floral centerpieces.

In my opinion, nobody does uses a compote for a buffet better than Eddie Ross. He is THE genius in using elevation in his buffet and food displays.

What are some of your favorite uses for compotes in your home?
